Of Firsts

"Of firsts" is an exploration of Yelahanka Old Town, seeking to find out the prevalence of businesses that were the first of its kinds when they started off. The narrative of this book moves with the anecdotes of customers and businessmen, and maps out the reach that each of these businesses have had. This book can also be understood as the movement of self through a diverse expanse of stories, to understand the essence of how a business grows on a customer and the natural course that a business takes. The book can also be understood as an arrival of the maker. This arrival though not obvious in the book, traces a path of first being overwhelmed by stories and then finally identifying the essence of how a business grows on a customer; how a business takes its own course by still keeping true with its own ethos. This kind of movement is natural and subtle.

The Move

Traditionally we would think of movement as a physical activity that enables locomotion. This aside, there are deeper and varied ways of understanding this term in a glocal perspective. Looking beyond locational maps, this book is a story of a journey and journey of stories. It makes an attempt to explore, understand, analyse and correlate the deeper aspects of a society. ‘The Move’ establishes the movement of people starting from their origin and where they are located in the town, moving to where they procure their basic resources and finally where their market lies. With the broader line of enquiry of small and large-scale industries, the connection came together seamlessly when the photographs and stories were clubbed and analysed. This map of Yelahanka answers the question of ‘WHERE?’ and explores the connections one would otherwise overlook and ignore. This pictorial book offers a new outlook on mapping Yelahanka, once known to be a town that did not exist on the maps of Bengaluru!
